First Half: Eagles Control the Tempo
The JV Eagles came out hungry for their matchup against VES, sporting a revamped back four with Handley unavailable. Johnson and Rapp looked incredibly composed in the center-back positions, flanked by Dickinson and Gilliam on the outside. The midfield trio remained unchanged from the previous fixture, while David Roberts earned his first start of the season as an inverted winger.
From the opening whistle, it was clear that Covenant could possess the ball at will through the middle with decisive one-two combinations. However, looking to settle early nerves and pressure the VES fullbacks, the Eagles quickly began utilizing long balls to the wings. Kincel had a field day on the flank, linking up smoothly with Barrett and Luck to send a series of dangerous crosses whizzing just past the strikers. Roberts and Ochs also looked threatening early on, with Ochs forcing a spectacular save from the VES keeper on a well-struck volley.
The relentless early pressure finally broke the deadlock 20 minutes into the match. Johnson launched a massive long throw-in into the penalty box, finding Barrett. Barrett controlled the ball with a deft first touch before burying a clinical finish into the bottom-left corner, leaving the keeper with absolutely no chance.
Heading into the match, starting Gilliam was a lingering question mark due to his recent recovery from an illness. Within the first 20 minutes, those doubts were firmly erased. Displaying incredible guile, poise, and sheer grit, Gilliam looked completely fearless until severe cramping unfortunately forced him off leaving him looking disappointed on the sideline while receiving pickle juice to help with recovery. Sumka subbed on to replace him, while Krop and Kalergis entered the match to bolster the attack. The substitutes immediately injected energy into the game, utilizing positive movement, assured first touches, and smart body positioning to shield the ball and wear down a leggy VES backline.
While Roberts remained incredibly positive in the attack, VES began finding some joy down the left flank as the Eagles struggled to track back defensively. A tactical change was required, Kalergis was moved to the wing and Roberts up top. This paid dividends almost immediately. Barrett slipped a beautiful ball in behind the defense for Roberts to chase. Showing blistering pace, Roberts took a big touch before unleashed a powerful strike. The goalie managed to get a hand to it, but the power was too much to handle, marking Roberts' first goal for the club and sending the bench into a frenzy. Meril then subbed on, brought added composure to the Eagles' possession game as Covenant comfortably controlled the remaining minutes to head into halftime with a well-deserved 2-0 lead.
Second Half: Grinding Out the Win
The second half started with urgent shouts of "wake up!" from the VES side, countered by the cheers of "finish!" from Kincel’s army. A laser-focused Luck returned to the pitch with a point to prove. After some excellent team passing, a sharp cut-back found Luck, who hit it first-time with his right foot. The keeper was planted to the spot, only able to watch as the ball sailed narrowly wide past his right-hand post.
Covenant continued pushing hard for a third. Barrett looked hungry, Roberts had dreams of a hat-trick, and Ochs made the inverted winger role look easy. It remained a grueling, goalless period for some time until Barrett brilliantly danced past two defenders before passing the ball into the back of the net. Not wanting to risk a goal-line clearance, Roberts stabbed it in to secure his second goal of the day and Covenant’s third.
Meril, Krop, and Kalergis continued to provide serious offensive pressure, keeping VES camped out in their own box for much of the remaining match. Matthas played slightly higher, excellently collecting clearances and recycling balls well alongside Rapp and Johnson.
Defensively, Max Dickinson was having one of those days that teammates will speak of for years to come. He was absolutely on fire, keeping his opposite number firmly in his back pocket. He barely misplaced a pass all day, defending valiantly while simultaneously kickstarting many of Covenant's counter-attacks.
As the lights began to fade and legs grew tired, Beach was forced into action in goal. Showcasing sticky, safe hands, he didn't look beatable. However, late in the game, Covenant conceded a corner, causing a brief moment of panic in the box. A good clearance eventually sparked an Ochs and Roberts break. With VES leaving men up Meril marshaled the troops into a 4-4-2 diamond formation to hunt for a fourth goal whilst protecting the middle. Unfortunately, having given up width in the new formation, VES managed to strike down the left flank, sweeping a good cross into the net to bring the score to 3-1.
Though the Eagles couldn't keep the clean sheet, it was a fantastic performance in front of electric fans! A huge thank you to all the families who came out to support, and to VES and the referees for being such great sports!
