CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- For Covenant’s Kerrigan Poindexter, athletics have always come naturally.
Well… almost always.
A tri-sport athlete, Poindexter is headed to Navy for lacrosse, but the game she now loves didn’t come easy at first.
“I hated it," Poindexter said. "I hated the sport it was terrible. There was too much running and I wasn’t good so I just did not like it.”
But during the pandemic, everything changed.
With time on her hands and no one watching, Poindexter got to work.
“We got into this turf barn that our friend's dad made for us," Poindexter said. "We were just in there every single day working on our skills, our shooting and footwork and our stick work. After that year we really excelled in our skill set.”
As her skills grew, so did her love for the game.
That growth has carried over into everything she does.
“She’s without question the most athletic girl I’ve ever been around," head women's basketball coach Damin Altizer said. "So much of that comes from playing multiple sports. In all of her moments you can obviously see lacrosse in basketball and volleyball and basketball and vise versa.”
Now, she’s taking that passion to the next level.
Poindexter is headed to the Naval Academy to play Division I lacrosse.
“I was so excited when Navy reached out to me and was working on recruiting me," Poindexter said. "I was totally head over heels excited and ready to completely commit to them.”
She's bringing more than just talent with her.
“Zealously magnanimous because she’s so passionate about whatever is in front of her," Altizer said. "But she's doing it for someone else. For the team, for the community, she’s the epitome of everything you want in a high school student athlete.”
