Living Out the Season: First Grade Brings Joy to the Cancer Center

As part of their ongoing formation in learning what it means to be third (placing the needs of others before their own), Covenant’s first graders stepped beyond the classroom this Christmas season to share joy and encouragement with members of our local community.

Sentara Martha Jefferson’s Cancer Center in Charlottesville welcomed some very special visitors on Wednesday, December 17, when first graders from the Covenant School delivered a festive Christmas tree to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
The tree was decorated by the young students themselves with handmade pink and silver ornaments centered around a nutcracker theme, all designed to spread holiday cheer to those facing health challenges.
“We are bringing a Christmas tree to the hospital so that people can see it,” said first grader Virginia Glassick, explaining the simple but powerful intention behind their visit.
Another student, Virginia Hilliard, shared why the project was meaningful: “We made it and we made the ornaments so people wouldn’t feel sad. They’re going through a lot of stuff that maybe hurts them.”
First grader John Goss added, “It’s about bringing people together and helping them be not like sad,” capturing the spirit of kindness driving the children’s efforts.
The cancer center noted that the gift was entirely the idea of the Covenant School and said the students’ thoughtful gesture supports their ongoing efforts to raise spirits during what can be a difficult time for patients and families.
