Upper School Biology Teacher — Long-Term Substitute (Grade 9)
The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts & Sciences school in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a dedicated educator to serve as a long-term substitute teaching Biology in the Upper School during the spring semester of the 2026-27 school year. The position will begin between February 1 and February 22, depending on availability, and continue through early May.
Our school, which serves over 750 students from Pre-K through Grade 12, is a gospel-centered community of faith and learning committed to the formation of the whole person through a rich and humane education. Position Overview
The Upper School Biology Teacher guides students in the study of living things through careful observation, scientific inquiry, laboratory investigation, and engagement with the fundamental concepts of biology. The long-term substitute will teach college-preparatory Biology courses and support students in developing scientific knowledge, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the order and complexity of the natural world.
We are seeking an educator with a strong background in the life sciences who can provide clear and engaging instruction while maintaining continuity in an established course during an extended faculty leave. The teacher should be comfortable conducting laboratory activities and maintaining appropriate laboratory safety practices. The Biology Teacher integrates Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully into classroom life and collaborates with other members of the Upper School faculty in the shared work of forming students within a Christian liberal arts education.
This is a long-term substitute position beginning beginning as early as February 1 or as late as February 22, and continuing through early May.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Science Education, or a related field preferred
- Experience teaching high school science preferred
- Strong background in the life sciences, including laboratory techniques and safety practices
- Ability to provide clear, engaging instruction and support students in developing scientific
understanding and critical thinking
- Ability to integrate Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully in the context of teaching
