Students Serve Over 45 Different Churches & Organizations in Annual Community Service Day

The day before Thanksgiving break, more than 300 students, faculty, and staff from the Hickory Campus set out for Covenant’s annual Community Service Day.
Mr. Matt Dakolios, new Math Teacher and Coordinator of Community Service, took charge of the planning and execution of this year’s community service day. “I am so grateful that I was able to experience Community Service Day for the first time this year.  I was so impressed by such a massive group effort that positively impacted the community in many ways,” said Dakolios. He commented that he hopes this can be a step in modeling service and helping to make service a regular part of the lives of students.
Students and staff served at various locations throughout the area. These include:
  • Abundant Life
  • Salvation Army
  • Salvation Army thrift store
  • Ronald McDonald House
  • All Saints Anglican Church
  • Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church
  • Boys and Girls Club, Southwood
  • Jefferson Park Baptist Church
  • Wesley Memorial Church
  • Ivy Creek Methodist Church
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Church of our Savior
  • Christ Community Church
  • Camp Holiday Trails
  • Covenant School walking trail
These students in grades 6-12, along with faculty and staff raised nearly $1000 for Habitat for Humanity in Covenant’s portion of the Rake-A-Thon and they gave over 1300 hours of service to Central Virginia. Parish Administrator at Church of Our Savior in Charlottesville, Carolyn Voldrich, put it well when describing the impact of this community service day: “You all worked so hard and really helped to clean up the church grounds.  Please convey our gratitude to your students, who went above and beyond the call of community service!"

Another community member also commented on Covenant's community service day, "As I have said before, Covenant’s having their students donate their time and efforts to help various churches...each fall to deal with leaves and other things is a wonderful lesson for the students in the value of donating their time and efforts to help others. Many thanks again to you, the students and staff/faculty who gave of their time and effort to help us."
Covenant’s growing interest in community service and building a culture of service into the lives of its students is an answer to “What kind of life do you want to lead?” and “What kind of person do you want to be?” A Covenant student is one with a heart for service.
