Lower School Visual Art Teacher (PreK-5th Grade)

The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts & Sciences school in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a dedicated educator to teach Visual Art in the Lower School beginning in the 2026-27 school year. Our school, which serves over 750 students from Pre-K through Grade 12, is a gospel-centered community of faith and learning committed to the formation of the whole person through a rich and humane education.

Faculty at The Covenant School understand teaching as a Christian vocation. They take personal responsibility for students’ intellectual, spiritual, and personal development and work together to cultivate a community in which students are known, loved, and appropriately challenged.

Position Overview

The Lower School Visual Art Teacher plays an important role in the early formation of students through the practice of visual art. We are seeking an educator who is committed to the holistic formation of children and who approaches teaching with both joy and seriousness of purpose. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, and other media, the teacher helps students grow in habits of attention, imagination, and careful work while introducing foundational and common art skills and practices.

The teacher establishes a classroom environment marked by clear routines, encouragement, and joyful engagement in the creative process. In this setting, students learn to observe carefully, work with increasing patience and craftsmanship, and express ideas creatively through visual form. The Visual Art Teacher integrates Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully into classroom life and fosters an environment in which students encounter the goodness, truth, and beauty of God’s creation.

The Visual Art Teacher collaborates closely with classroom teachers and other Lower School faculty, contributing to the shared work of forming students within a Christian liberal arts education.

- Bachelor’s degree in Art, Art Education, or a related field required
