The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts & Sciences school in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a dedicated educator to teach rhetoric and theater in the Upper School beginning in the 2026-27 school year. Serving more than 750 students from Pre-K through Grade 12, our school is a gospel-centered community of faith and learning committed to the formation of the whole person through a rich and humane education.
Faculty at The Covenant School understand teaching as a Christian vocation. They take personal responsibility for students’ intellectual, spiritual, and personal growth and work together to cultivate a community of scholars in which students are known, challenged, and formed in habits of thought and character for lives of faithful service.
Position OverviewUpper School courses in rhetoric and theater invite students to develop their ability to think carefully, speak clearly, and communicate persuasively before an audience. Students study the classical principles of rhetoric, including the appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos, while learning to shape arguments appropriate to particular audiences and occasions. Through speeches, debates, and dramatic performance, students learn to use their voices and bodies to communicate in a clear, artful, and winsome manner.
Teaching responsibilities may include one or more courses in rhetoric and theater, and the position may be structured as either part-time or full-time depending on the needs of the school and the expertise of the candidate.
We are seeking an educator who enjoys working with adolescents and who can establish an orderly, respectful, and intellectually vibrant classroom. The teacher approaches rhetoric and theater with both intellectual seriousness and creative energy, cultivating habits of attention, wonder, and thoughtful inquiry while helping students grow in confidence and clarity of expression.
In keeping with the school’s mission, the teacher integrates Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully into instruction, helping students understand the power of words and performance as gifts that may be used to pursue truth, cultivate virtue, and serve others.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Experience teaching high school students preferred
- Experience in theater performance, speech, or debate strongly preferred
- Ability to integrate Christian faith authentically and thoughtfully in the context of teaching
We welcome candidates whose experiences and backgrounds enrich this shared work, within a community shaped by a shared commitment to the school’s Christian mission and educational vision.
