Annual Shakespeare Competition Results

An old, dethroned king losing his mind in the midst of a storm; a young woman wishing her lover wasn't her father's enemy; an ambitious man wrestling with the temptation to violently achieve his desires--these were all characters brought to life last week in Covenant's annual Shakespeare Monologue Competition.
On Thursday, January 11, nine of our high school students skillfully performed a variety of monologues from Shakespeare's plays. The results:

First place: Emerson Helmbrecht - King Lear: "Blow winds, and crack your cheeks!"
Runner up: Kaley Hutter - Helena: "Oh spite! Oh hell!" (A Midsummer Night's Dream)
Honorable mention: Adelyn Murrie - Phoebe: "I would not be thy executioner" (As You Like It)

Other participants included Lily Li, Caitlin McClain, Lucas McGraw, Chris Messimer, Amelia Park, and Michael Sawyer.

This competition is part a larger national competition sponsored by the English Speaking Union. As our winner, Emerson Helmbrecht will represent Covenant at the ESU Charlottesville Branch competition on February 10 at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton. The winner of that competition will move on the the national competition in New York City on April 23.

In last year's Branch competition, our own Adelyn Murrie took second place. We wish Emerson all the best as he seeks to continue Covenant's success in this competition.
