First Grade Learns About Ancient Egypt

Students in first grade kicked off their study of Ancient Egypt last week. They started the unit by learning how the environment plays an essential role in human civilization. They studied the importance of the Nile River to Ancient Egyptian people and culture.
One of the practices that the students learned about was irrigation and how it helped with agriculture and combatted flooding.

They then took play-with-a-purpose to a whole new level! They put their learning into action digging "ditches" modeled after how the Egyptians built irrigation ditches for the dry season. Even at recess, our students have so much joy in learning!
