Kindergarten Nature Walk

Kindergarten students kicked off their new science unit on trees by exploring the various trails on the Hickory Campus. They were amazed by God’s beautiful creation.
To prepare for the nature walk, seventh-grade science teacher, Sarah Green, showed different examples of tree branches and leaves native to the area. Kindergarteners applied the skills they learned in their recent five senses unit and were quickly able to identify different attributes as well as compare and contrast the different leaf examples. As an added bonus, they were able to taste fresh maple syrup.

Seventh-grade Out In Creation students accompanied the Kindergarteners on their nature walk, guiding them in their tree identification along the way. It was a wonderful opportunity to unite the two campuses out in nature. The lesson concluded with leaf rubbings, tracings, and of course, a picnic lunch.

Covenant students in other grade levels are also taking amazing field trips this fall to take their learning to a whole new level. Students have visited Jamestown, Chiles Orchard, James Madison University Planetarium, Wildrock, Raven’s Roost, Lewis-Ginter Botanical Gardens, and the American Shakespeare Theater.
