Christmas Service Projects at Covenant

During this special season of joy and giving, Covenant encourages us to spend time in service to others. Students on both campuses spent much of December focused on service and wrapped up their grade/division-level projects before Christmas Break.
At Birdwood, fifth-grade students hosted a school-wide coin drive and baked items for a “pay-what-you-can” Marché de Noël (French Christmas Market). The money raised by our school will be used to support the Ishan Gala Foundation, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children and families fighting cancer. Students learned about this organization at Chapel from the Gala family, who lost their son Ishan to cancer in 2008, and currently have two boys, Archer (Class of 2029) and Eli (Class of 2033), in the Lower School. Students were reminded that God comforts us in our struggles, and then through His Holy Spirit allows us to comfort others, being the hands and feet of Jesus in this world.

At Hickory, Mr. Collmus’ classes assembled gift bags with bibles, snacks, and more to help Good News Jail and Prison Ministries. Guests at the Hickory campus included Chaplains Mr. Joe Varaska (current Covenant parent), Mrs. Angela Holstege (alumni parent), and Mr. Richard Van Arsdale.

Also at Hickory, Middle and Upper School students continued their annual partnership with the Virginia Institute of Autism (VIA) through the Angel Tree project. Each Middle School community group in Grades 6-8 and each Upper School homeroom was assigned a gift tag that represents a student with autism from an underprivileged family served through VIA. The funds will be used to provide gift cards to a local restaurant of choice so that the family can enjoy a meal out so their son or daughter can practice socialization skills in a public environment. This will bless the family on multiple levels.
