Travel Writing in English 6

Sixth-grade students in Caroline Mann’s English class are writing about a travel experience to practice their personal, engaging, and in-depth writing. Their model has been chapters read from Mark Twain's Roughing It
After starting class with sentence diagramming (as they often do), students were shown different examples in class, picking from three unique styles to write in. They were encouraged to use detailed, descriptive language that focused on the five senses to help immerse their audience in the experience. Their writings were to be personal and based in some truth and fact, even if there are fictional elements. One student was writing about a trip her family took for Christmas a few years ago, with a lot of vivid imagery about her favorite holiday. They were able to write their 300-word passages over the course of several days, finishing up before the Thanksgiving break.
