Hannah Sumhka '25 Wins Bus Lines Poetry Contest

Fifth grader Hannah Sumhka was recently named a winner of the Bus Lines Poetry Contest. Bus Lines "puts poetry in motion" during its annual solicitation of original student works.
This year's theme was Peace and Justice. Hannah's poem No will be displayed on CAT buses throughout the city in 2018. As a winner of the contest, she was invited to a poetry reading at the Downtown Transit Station in conjunction with Festival of the Book. Congratulations, Hannah!

No

The woman sat motionless in her seat,
bundling up the warmth from the passengers crammed inside the bus.
As soon as the bus was rolling a man called out, “Wait!”
The bus stopped.
The man walked in the bus moving towards her seat.
“Get up,” growled the man.
She looked at the man, took a deep breath
And said…. “NO.”
