Covenant Lower School Students Compete in Debate Semifinals
Fifth and sixth graders at the Lower School have partnered with the Charlottesville Debate League, a free student-run organization at the University of Virginia. Sponsored by 5/6 Language Arts teacher Karen Zimmerman and coached by two undergraduate students at UVA, Covenant students have competed in three meets over the course of the year.
At the most recent tournament, partners Sophia Brissett '24 and Maddox Crouch '25 qualified for the the semifinal round debating the resolution "The Revolutionary War was Justified." Students must write contentions and be prepared to defend both sides of the chosen argument. Previous debates have covered freedom of speech on college campuses and universal background checks on firearm sales. By learning to articulate and persuasively argue a position, Covenant students are gaining lifelong skills through their participation with the Charlottesville Debate League. The final tournament of the year will be held in April. The Covenant Debate team meets after school on Mondays.
Located in Charlottesville, VA, The Covenant School is a non-denominational, private, Christian day school for Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Students benefit from a challenging academic program, visual and performing arts, competitive athletics, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities.
