More Than Just Words

As our Birdwood Campus continues celebrating Virginia’s Virtual Festival of the Book, students were greeted by a familiar face as one of the guest authors. Author and Covenant parent, Patricia Taylor, read her book Runaway Words to students in Grades 1 and 2 earlier this week.
Mrs. Taylor, who has students at both Birdwood and Hickory, is a mother of three, and her oldest son is diagnosed with Autism. Her inspiration for the story comes from her own daughter who, for Christmas one year, asked for nothing but her brother to have his words back.

Here is a brief description of Runaway Words:

There is nothing like the bond between siblings, especially when that relationship includes a disabled sibling. Addi doesn't understand why her big brother Charlie can't talk to her. When her mom tells her that Charlie lost his words, Addi, with some help from her younger brother, embarks on a mission to find them. She looks all over and tries everything she can think of to find Charlie's lost words. In the end, she discovers there is more to communication than just words and more than one way to say "I love you." This book will appeal to a wide variety of audiences, especially anyone touched by disability and the communication challenges that occur with disabilities like autism, cerebral palsy, apraxia, speech disorders, and developmental disabilities.

Thank you, Mrs. Taylor, for creatively teaching us that communication is more than just spoken words.
