Fifth Grade Service Project Supports Legaci Eats

Fifth-grade students at The Covenant School support a worthy cause for their annual Christmas service project. As student leaders of the Lower School, they lead the school in raising money, money they have earned from their allowances or doing additional chores.
This year, our Lower School students raised $1,104 for a wonderful local organization, Legaci Eats.

Legaci Eats is an organization founded by Jocelynn Helmbrecht (mother of Emerson ‘18 and Nathan ‘31) and chef Steve Easton that provides delicious, home-cooked meals to families in need. Meals go to families, group homes for those with disabilities, nursing homes, and the elderly. According to them, L.E.G.A.C.I. stands for Love, Empowerment, God, Acceptance, Cooking, and Inclusion. “In May 2020 as a response to COVID-19, we diverted all our attention to feeding those in need in our area. To date, we have given away and delivered over 15,000 meals,” says Helmbrecht. Helmbrecht and Easton, along with a host of other volunteers, deliver meals all over Charlottesville and the surrounding areas.

Karen Zimmerman, fifth-grade teacher and service project organizer writes, “Jocelynn and Steve embody ‘being third’ and are trusting God radically just as our ‘Heroes of the faith’ have!  They met our students via Zoom and shared that they needed an extra refrigerator -- well actually they needed three, but they only asked for one and prayed.  God provided three donated refrigerators -- exactly what they needed.  We were also struck by the commitment to give their best: hot and delicious home-cooked meals just as they would serve to their friends and family.”

“Our hope is to continue the ministry even after COVID-19. There will always be hungry families...The joy on their faces is priceless,” says Helmbrecht.
