Welcome, New Faculty!

We are pleased to introduce two new additions to our faculty, both of whom joined us after the start of the school year:

Mr. Ceejay Renner-Thomas - MS & US Visual Art
Mr. Renner-Thomas is a 2018 graduate of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts and his talent is evident across mediums, particularly in woodworking and glass blowing. We aspire to be a community of scholars where learners apprentice, and Mr. Renner-Thomas will be an exceptional craftsman to lead our young artist in this way.  He also brings many years of working with adolescents as a volunteer in Young Life and his giftedness in relating to, connecting with, and shepherding this age group was evident throughout his interview process. Mr. Renner-Thomas will be teaching all Middle School visual art classes as well as Visual Art 1 in the Upper School.

Dr. John Matsui -  Upper School History
Dr. Matsui comes to us after teaching six years at VMI and one year at Washington & Lee University.  He earned his Bachelor’s degree in History at Princeton University and his Master’s degree and Ph.D. in History at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Matsui has published a number of academic writings, including a book about the Civil War: The First Republican Army: The Army of Virginia and the Radicalization of the Civil War.  He is energized by the opportunity to work with younger scholars who will, no doubt, benefit from his apprenticing! He will be teaching history as well as leading the Speech and Debate class in the Upper School.

Both gentlemen, like all of our faculty and staff, are examples of the Lord’s generosity to The Covenant School.
Please join us in giving thanks for this provision, and in welcoming these teachers to our community!
