The Annual Shakespeare Monologue Competition

Yesterday, January 16, six Covenant students at our Hickory Campus competed in the annual Shakespeare Monologue Competition. This serves as the first round of the National Shakespeare Competition, sponsored by the English Speaking Union, and has now been held annually for 37 years with over 20,000 students participating across the United States.
Participating students prepared monologues from a variety of Shakespeare’s plays. First place was awarded to junior Jack Barr with his performance as Edmund from King Lear. Other participants included freshman Nathan Klintworth (runner-up), senior Soren Scott, sophomore Charlotte Caldejon, sophomore Seth Sexton, and freshman Lily Durden. Current teachers, Jerry King and Alana Speth, as well as former Head of Upper School, Leslie Moeller, served on this year’s judging panel.

Jack will go on to compete at the 37th Annual ESU National Shakespeare Competition: Charlottesville Branch, which will take place on February 15th, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, Virginia.
