Developing Roots: Math in Kindergarten

Kindergarten sets the foundation for young learners at the Birdwood Campus. Teachers lay the important groundwork for many subjects, but especially important is preparation for Singapore Math. The best way to ready our students for their foray into Singapore Math strategies is through Developing Roots.
Created by educators with expertise in early education and Singapore Math, Developing Roots is an innovative curriculum that places emphasis on exploring where learning is driven by hands-on experiences. Children are challenged to develop reasoning, communication, and reflection skills.

Developing Roots contains four major content areas: Number Sense, Measurement, Geometry, and Operations. These content areas deepen the mathematical understanding a child experiences at the pre-school level and help to build new meaning of concepts by providing real-life context in the form of lessons and activities. Presentation styles include whole group and small group lessons with follow-up opportunities designed as independent or small group tasks or work centers.

At Covenant, our Kindergarten learners engage in work that challenges them to ask questions, problem-solve, and investigate math concepts — all while meeting their individual learning needs. This unique culture in the classroom allows for student responsibility and joyful engagement that develops positive and successful attitudes in our aspiring young mathematicians.
