Annual Convocation Begins the Year in Prayer

Last Friday, the entire school gathered in the Hickory gym for the 6th Annual Covenant Convocation. Families, board members, faculty, staff, and students in grades K-12 celebrated the start of another school year, and Covenant’s 35th year.
Dr. Mo Gaffney, Head of the Lower School shared the opening prayer of the celebration and quoted Colossians 3:12-15: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Headmaster George Sanker emphasized this verse in his address and encouraged all to “put on Christ”.

Covenant Students, Sophia Brissett ‘24 and Giulio Degiorgis ‘20, both spoke to all in attendance about the impact Covenant has had on them personally. Sophia remarked that her time and education at Covenant led her to become a Christian and Giulio spoke about Covenant as a “second home” and as a school that values much more than just excellent academics.

At the end of the celebration, Upper School Chaplain Bryan Verbrugge offered a blessing on all in attendance. He shared some of his thoughts about Convocation a few days later. “Convocation is an incredible sight...the only time during the year that all of our students and faculty (with parents too) gather together in one room,” he said. “ What a great privilege to start the year this way, with reminders from our Headmaster and current students about how best to frame the upcoming year!” Dr. Mo Gaffney also praised this annual celebration."Convocation is one of the most beautiful times of the year as the Covenant community comes together as one to begin a new chapter in the Covenant story.” We are excited to see what God has in store for Covenant’s 35th year.
