Grade 4 Medieval Unit Culminates in a Colorful Festival

Every year in May, students in Grade 4 celebrate nine weeks of a Europe in the Middle Ages project-based learning unit with a Medieval Festival. “Students are immersed in this time period between the fall of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance through literature, class discussions, Reader's Theater, and guest expert visits,” said Holly Garmon, Grade 4 Teacher. “Students learn about feudal society, life on a manor, the construction of castles, cathedrals, and monasteries, as well as the rise of knighthood.”
At the Festival, students’ handmade student projects are showcased through an Open House Museum. “Each project is an artifact that reflects one area of medieval life,” said Garmon. “Students dress up in medieval clothing and present these projects to their peers, parents, and members of the faculty. Afterward, students celebrate with a medieval feast and tournament games.” Students participate in games like Capture the Flag, Blind Man's Bluff, and Bocce Ball, all of which originated in the Middle Ages. At the end of the festival, students compete in a knockout Pool Noodle Joust.
This year’s festival was a rousing success and is just one of the many highlights of a Covenant education.
