Friday Faculty Spotlight: Laura Marks

Mrs. Marks has been teaching for 30 years, 15 of which have been teaching first-grade at Covenant. She has lived in Charlottesville since 1990, having moved with her husband from Queens, NY where she grew up, and she has 2 grown children, Robert and Maria.
She enjoys photography, going to movies and plays, reading and attending UVA Men's Basketball games. She loves teaching but also loves her summers off. Her "favorite place on the planet" is the Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks on the shores of Lake George in New York State. She says, " I grew up going there for two weeks each August and continue to do that, for 53 years now. It is where I go to refresh, renew and reconnect with friends who’ve known me for decades."
When asked “Why do you love Covenant?”, she replied:
"The Covenant community has been a huge blessing to me over the years. The friendship, support, and mentorship of my peers and administration, the support of parents and families, is a special thing. One of my favorite things about teaching so long here is that I get to watch former students grow over the years, and eventually walk across the stage at graduation."
When asked about upcoming topics and happenings in first grade, she said:
"These next eight weeks of school always fly by and are bittersweet. Two of my very favorite First Grade things happen soon---reading aloud Charlotte's Web and learning about the Lewis and Clark Expedition."
