Dr. Teresa A. Sullivan Named 2018 Covenant Commencement Speaker

It is with great pleasure that we announce our 2018 Commencement speaker, Dr. Teresa A. Sullivan, President of the University of Virginia. In her time at the University, Dr. Sullivan has been a champion for the liberal arts.
This is most evident in UVA’s College of Arts & Sciences where she has worked to expand the role of the liberal arts through the General Education Committee. These efforts represent the first significant, comprehensive changes to the College’s undergraduate student curriculum in more than four decades. About the progress, Chad Wellmon, Chair of the General Education Committee, stated that, “This historic step will strengthen our ability to provide UVA students an education that connects the knowledge and purpose of the liberal arts with lifelong commitments to citizenship, vocation and the love of learning.”

President Sullivan is UVA’s eighth president. The author or coauthor of six books and many scholarly articles, she has focused her most recent research efforts on measuring productivity in higher education. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Sullivan is a graduate of Michigan State University’s James Madison College, and earned her doctoral degree in sociology from the University of Chicago.
