Covenant Freshman Named Science Fair Champion

Congratulations to Kyle Rajapakse ('25) who won two awards at the 2022 Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair held at Old Dominion University on April 9 for his project "Clear Water Doesn't Always Mean Clean Water: Detection of Water Contamination".

"Although water may appear clear it may contain pollutants which can be toxic to both humans as well as marine life. I have come up with a surrogate approach for the detection of water contamination by making 2 types of sensors to detect conductivity and to come up with a standard curve, to detect minute levels of total dissolved solids in water with a detection level up to 0.000002g, which is 300 times cheaper, and 30 times more sensitive than current methods. The plan is to file for a Patent for this system in the near future."

Kyle participated in two State competitions:

1. Virginia State Science & Engineering Fair
He was awarded:
Science Champion:  Awarded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)
Third Place: Awarded by the Virginia Section of the American Water Works Association

2. State Stockholm Junior Water Prize Competition (after being awarded first place at the Piedmont Regional Science Fair)
The results of the State Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition will be announced in a few weeks. The winners will then move on to the International level.
