The Covenant Athletic Department is proud to name John Spears as our varsity boys basketball coach. A graduate of Nelson County High School, Coach Spears will take over at the helm for the basketball program.
John has an extensive athletic resume. He played basketball and ran track at Chowan Junior College, worked for YMCA as Adult & Youth sports director, and has held the position of the Commissioner of the Valley Officials Basketball Association for over 20 years.
Coach Spears also officiated at both the high school and college levels. He officiated in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for 38+ years, and officiated in the NCAA for 28 years at DI, II, and III levels in the CAA, Big South, MEAC, and Southern Conferences. During his time, he was invited to officiate several high-profile contests including a DIII National Championship and DII East Regional Championship game.
Finally, Coach Spears has coached AAU basketball for 40 years, advancing to National AAU Championships several times. Some of his notable protégé include Cory Alexander, a former UVA basketball player and San Antonio Spurs draft pick, Reggie Harris, a draft pick of the Boston Red Sox, and Kenny Brooks, current Women’s Head Basketball Coach at Virginia Tech, among many others.
We are excited for Coach Spears to take the reins of this program and build it strong! By the way, Coach Spears is an avid Pickleball player!
