A Glimpse Into Distance Learning - Birdwood Campus

Covenant Lower School teachers have been providing authentic learning opportunities for their classes and continue to meet the academic and social needs of their students even in this virtual environment.

Kindergarten teachers had the wonderful opportunity to personally hand-deliver end-of-year project materials to each Kindergartener’s home, keeping up a memorable tradition. Seeing their faces (at a distance, of course) made for a special connection.

Our Kindergarten teachers have been in awe of the progress their Kindergarten readers have continued to make during this time. In addition to leading live whole class meetings and providing recorded instruction, they have been meeting with their students for one-on-one reading time over Zoom, a chance for them to engage with their students individually and listen to their reading. As Mrs. Tolman said, “When they pull out a book to read to me, they are so happy to allow me to enter into their world and listen to their story; it makes them feel valued. I am thrilled to get to experience the joys of hearing my kindergartners read to me, especially when they smile with a toothless grin!”

Mr. Matt Johnson, Fifth Grade Science and Bible teacher, has been leading his students through a unit on flight. After reading about the Montgolfier brothers and their work creating the first practical hot air balloon, students designed and built their own models at home! They were able to dialogue back and forth to discuss the successes and failures of the experiment. And while Mr. Johnson is thankful for this continued instruction, he has also loved being able to connect with his students through Morning Meetings, a time for whole-class activities that continue to build community through laughter and shared experience.
