Lower School
The School believes that it is important for students to be neat and clean and to wear clothing in good condition and appropriate to the season. Students are expected to dress and style their hair in a manner that allows a degree of individual expression without being extreme and attracting unnecessary attention.
Upper School
The Covenant School maintains a dress code to ensure that community standards of modesty and neatness are fulfilled, while allowing for a degree of personal expression. No aspect of a student’s dress or appearance should serve as a distraction to the school environment. The guidelines of the dress code are designed to clarify expectations/requirements and reduce the need for multiple corrective interactions between students and staff. The School expects that the students and parents will make every effort to comply with the following guidelines – which apply equally to all students:
- All clothing items must be in good repair and be appropriate in “fit.” Items that are torn, frayed, or threadbare may not be worn to school. Items may not be worn to enhance or draw undue attention to one’s physique (e.g. graphics appearing on the backside of pants or shorts).
- Graphics may not be offensive to the philosophy of the school. Graphics that contain any references to sex or sexual themes, alcoholic beverages, banned substances and narcotics, violence, partisan political statements, and any other graphics deemed divisive or distracting by the administration are specifically prohibited.
All Shirts and Tops must:
- completely cover the individual’s midriff, cleavage, shoulders (including the top of the arms). Shirts should not extend below the buttocks.
All Pants, Shorts & Skirts must:
- completely cover the individual’s undergarments, which should not be visible at any time while meeting the normal physical requirements (i.e. sitting in a desk) of a school day
- be no more than 4” above the knee at all times during the school day
- ride near student’s waistline – not on the buttocks or below
Other guidelines:
- The covering of one’s head with hoods, all variations of kerchiefs, sunglasses, or hats is not permitted inside the school building.
- Sweatpants, athletic wear, and sleepwear are not permitted.
- Hairstyles must not serve as a distraction or draw undue attention.
- Body art (including tattoos) must not be visible at any time during the academic day.
- Jewelry pierced in body areas other than the ears is not permitted.
Dress code violations result in a demerit and the student may be required to “correct” his/her dress to be in compliance for the rest of the school day. This may result in a student being sent home, or a parent called to bring an appropriate outfit. The administration of the School reserves the right to make subjective judgments about a student’s attire regarding compliance or any condition that may not be covered by the guidelines above.
