It is part of the mission of The Covenant School to nurture the quality of servanthood in the hearts and minds of its students.
The basis for our community service requirement is found in the Bible. Jesus declared in Mark 12: 30-31 that the greatest commandment is to “…love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this:”Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these” (NIV). Earlier in that same gospel, Jesus told us that “…whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (NIV).
To that end, the School requires students in Grades 5-12 to be actively involved in volunteering in the community and beyond. Examples of community service performed by Covenant students include:
- Raking leaves in the fall for our neighbors who live near the School
- Collecting trash or paper for recycling
- Visiting nursing home residents
- Preparing Christmas baskets for Operation Christmas Child
- Service in local churches
- Habitat for Humanity
- SPCA and Adopt-a-Road
- Mission Trips
- Salvation Army Soup Kitchen
Requirements:
- Grades 5-6: 4 hours per quarter for a total of 16 hours per year.
- Grades 7-8: 7 hours per trimester for a total of 21 hours per year.
- Grades 9-12: 10 hours per trimester for a total of 30 hours per year.
Upper School
All students who complete four high school years at The Covenant School are required to have 120 hours of community service (Report Form) to graduate. A committee provides information and opportunities for students to help in fulfilling community service hours.
