Thank you for your interest in Covenant Camps!

Summer 2017 is right around the corner and The Covenant School offers sports and specialty camps for students from Rising K – Grade 12 for five weeks this summer. Below, you will find camps organized by week and time of day for your convenience.

Each Covenant camp is $175 unless otherwise noted. The Covenant School reserves the right to cancel an individual camp if minimum numbers are not met within two weeks of the camp date. Parents will be notified in writing and students will be offered an alternate camp offering OR a full refund if a camp is canceled.

Parents who wish to enroll their students in a morning and afternoon session have the option to allow their student to stay for the lunch hour for an additional $10 for the week. Students must pack their own lunch. Early drop off is also offered beginning at 8:00 a.m. for an additional $10 per week.

Youth Soccer with Bryan Verbrugge | Rising Grades 1 – 6 | Lower School Soccer Field
Covenant Soccer Camp! Come and enjoy the longest-running Covenant camp with Covenant’s Head Varsity Boys Soccer Coach Bryan Verbrugge. This camp is designed to help improve your dribbling, heading, shooting, trapping, tactical and technical skills, as well as offensive and defensive moves through a variety of drills and games. Coach V also involves current players and coaches from the Covenant Soccer staff.

Youth Basketball Camp with Caroline Wilke | Rising Grades 1 – 5 | Lower School Gymnasium
Calling all basketball players! Bring your energy and enthusiasm and come join Covenant’s Coach Wilke for some fun and excitement on the court! We will learn basketball fundamentals and rules of the game. There will be one-on-one and 2-ball contests, as well as team competitions. This camp is appropriate for all skill levels.

Photojournalism with Karen Zimmerman and Cathy Meaney | Rising Grades 4 – 8 | Lower School 9 am – 4 pm | $375 with lunch included
How well does your child know the fabulous city right in our back yard? In this project-based camp, students will enjoy a series of excursions within walking distance of the Lower School and other activities designed to teach them about the city of Charlottesville. Campers will create maps, take pictures, and write pieces in order to create publications highlighting the history and of the city around them. Be sure to bring two snacks, a water bottle, and sun protection each day.

One Thing Leads to Another (Rube Goldberg Camp) with Matt Johnson | Rising Grades 3 – 6 | Lower School | Supply Fee $10
In this exciting science-oriented camp, we will find ways to solve problems by creating whimsical machines out of everyday materials that link together to form fantastic chain reactions! Campers will be given a list of possible supplies 1-2 months in advance, so that we can work together to bring plenty of materials from which to assemble our kinetic creations. Programming with Chris Zimmerman | Rising Grades 4 – 6 | Lower School | Supply Fee $10
Dive into computer programming, learning not only the basics of coding, but also the logic and critical thinking behind it. Campers will receive their very own Raspberry Pi (a credit card-sized computer) and will compete numerous fun and interactive projects not only to teach them to program during the camp, but also enable them to continue learning on their own.

Mighty Mathematicians with Julia McCurdy | Rising Grades 2 – 3 | Lower School 
Come join Ms. McCurdy for some summer Singapore Math fun! Each day, mathematicians will be exposed to a variety of activities and games, which will build their number sense, understanding of part-part-whole (number bonds), spatial skills, problem solving and logic. Mathematicians will have fun playing games with dice, cards, pattern blocks, puzzles, and so much more! Mathematicians will also make math tools to keep at home!

Top Chefs 101 with Kelli Henning | Rising Grades 3 – 6 | Lower School | Supply Fee $15
Hone your skills and join Mrs. Henning in the kitchen for this fun week of cooking camp. In this hands-on cooking and baking camp, you will begin your training to become a top chef as we learn kitchen safety skills, how to read recipes, create grocery lists, sharpen your chopping abilities, and sweeten your pastry skills. You will gather fresh herbs from our school garden, cook with local produce, and of course delight in your creations. Top Recipes: Pizza, Seasonal Jams and Salsas, Chocolate Chip Cookies, and more.

Woodworking with Matt Johnson | Rising Grades 2 – 5 | Lower School | Supply Fee $15
In this hands-on camp, we will learn some basic woodworking techniques like cutting, sanding, and joining pieces of wood in order to make fun and useful items. Students will gain supervised experience with age-appropriate hand and power tools while discovering their own God-given desires and abilities to make fantastic creations that they students will choose. Choices may include birdhouses, treasure chests, signs, benches or stools, and even games! Come join us and let’s build great things together!

Chemistry with Chris | Rising Grades 4 – 6 | Lower School | Supply Fee $10
Grab your lab coat and delve into the world of chemistry through hands-on experiments. Build a battery out of pennies, create your own ice cream, write secret messages with homemade invisible ink and more!

June 19 – 23

Youth Field Hockey with Annie Gumbs | Rising Grades 8 – 12 | Upper School Field | $185
Come out and play field hockey at The Covenant School! Our mission is to create a positive, fun and competitive environment where the camper can focus on learning and developing critical skills to the game of field hockey. Both skills and game play are part of the camp, leaving the camper with new techniques, passion for the game, and friendships. Camps are open to any experience level.

Elite Basketball Training with Coach Wilson | Rising Grades 4 – 12 | Upper School Gym
In this hands-on learning experience, campers will spend a week fine-tuning the fundamentals of basketball while being introduced to elite basketball moves, drills, and training methods. Campers will also compete several times per day in shooting contests, ball handling drills, and in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5 games. Do not miss out on a chance to take your game to the next level!

Girls Development Soccer with Carol Bampoe | Rising Grades 6 – 12 | Upper School Field
The camp will serve to develop the fundamentals and improve players as well. We will work on drills that helps one become acquainted with the game both on and off the field. We will work on how to better understand the game of soccer (both from a player’s and coach’s perspective) and work on making permanent some habits that will improve your game.

Wilderness Survival with Chris Hall | Rising Grades 4 – 8 | Lower School 
A week-long crash course in survival skills. Learn about the Ten Essentials, how to prioritize your survival needs, and how to find or make food, fire, water, and shelter natural raw materials. Although we’ll use what we find on campus, the principles behind each experience can be extended to any situation, any place, any conditions. In addition to these skills, students will also learn to refine their senses through exercise and practice, how to manage wilderness first aid, and how to navigate using the sun, moon, and stars. They will also leave with a list of reading and viewing resources to continue their instruction!

Furniture Painting & Design with Kim Anderson | Rising Grades 2 – 8 | Lower School
A week of color exploration, room design, and how to paint furniture with furniture paint and then custom stencil or finish. Each participant will bring a small piece of furniture that will go in their room or specific room in the house (bedside tables are perfect, no bigger than 24” table top surface and NO GLASS). We will talk about the colors of the room it will be going in, how colors “talk” to each other in rooms. Each student will learn techniques on how to paint and finish their piece and walk out at the end of the week with a fully finished piece to put in their room! **The paint we use contains no VOCs.**

Come out and play Field Hockey at The Covenant School! American Girl Doll Fashion Week with Kimberly Ramberg | Rising Grades 2 – 6 | Lower School 
Enjoy a week of fashion design and sewing for the American Girl Doll. Mix and match fabrics for colorful and one-of-a-kind dresses. Learn to make reversible capes, robes and skirts too. Learn basics of pattern making and sewing all while playing with dolls. Wrap up the week with a doll fashion photo shoot and a red carpet fashion show on Friday! (If a child wants to join but does not have a doll, the instructor has two dolls she will bring as models.)

Girls Create: Artistic Expression and Organization with Becca Zimmerman | Rising Grades 5 – 8 | Lower School | Supply Fee $10
Is your daughter looking for a fun and creative way to get inspired, to express herself, and to get organized, all at the same time? If so, she may want to try bullet journaling! Each camper will create a beautiful and practical bullet journal that she can use for the 2017/2018 academic year. She will create monthly and weekly calendars, pages for hopes and dreams, inspirational quotes and more. Also a fun time for girls to bond as they create together.

June 26 – 30

Youth Football with Seth Wilson | Rising Grades 4 – 9 | Upper School Field
This is a fast paced and exciting football camp run by one of the best football coaching staff in the Charlottesville area. After leading the Covenant Football team to its first playoff appearance in seven years, this passionate staff is excited to help your son develop in the fundamentals of football. The camp will include fundamental teaching times and 7v7 passing competitions allowing your son to put his new skills into action.

Writer’s Workshop with Zella Page | Rising Grades 1 – 3 | Lower School
Calling all writers! Come join Mrs. Page for a week filled with learning the skills to help you grow as a writer and illustrator. We will read books together, learning craft strategies from published authors. We will practice a variety of writing techniques, including show not tell, metaphor, imagery, dialogue, onomatopoeia, and more! During the week we will put our drawing and writing skills to work and each child will create his or her own books.

Covenant Scavengers with Cara Metcalf | Rising Grades 1 – 6 | Lower School
We are looking for some adventurous orienteering campers! If scavenger hunts, clues, and learning about orienteering has been on your to do list, check this camp out. We are going to have five different types of scavenger hunts different days using: clues, maps, photos, compasses, and global positioning systems (GPS). Our week will end by making an orienteering course for the school to use during the school year. Get your compasses, maps, feet, and heads ready for exploring!

Coding Camp with Keith Page | Rising Grades 4 – 6 | Lower School 
This camp will get kids excited about computer science by providing them with opportunities to create codes and solve puzzles, both virtually and in hands-on game formats. Campers will also learn how to use code to create their own game!

Science Marvels with Zella Page | Rising Grades 2 – 4 | Lower School | Supply Fee $15
Do you love science experiments? Are you ready to get your hands dirty? Grab your goggles and lab coat and join us as we learn about chemical reactions, pressure, electricity, magnetism, gravity, surface tension, molecules, and so much more! Young scientists will participate in a variety of inquiry-driven hands-on experiments as they learn about some of the awesome forces woven into the fabric of God’s Creation.

Art with Nature with Cara Metcalf | Rising Grades K – 6 | Lower School 
God has done a marvelous job creating the world around us. Let us explore the colors, textures, and creativity of nature in our own artwork. We will be working on individual and group art work to display in the courtyard for all to see. Let us honor God in showing off what He created using various mediums. What are you going to create?

July 10 – 14

Youth Wrestling with Brian Lee | Rising Grades 1 – 8 | Upper School Wrestling Room |
Focusing on the fundamentals this camp is geared towards both new & experienced wrestlers.

Book Making with Dr. Gaffney | Rising Grades 1 – 4 | Lower School 
Young authors will enjoy a week of growing as writers, learning how to make a variety of books including pop-up books, graphic novels, wordless picture books, fiction and nonfiction stories. Students will learn how to make their own books. We will explore the classics and other favorites, as we learn from them and use their ideas in our own books. This will be a busy week of writing, illustrating, designing and making books. Our final day will conclude with an author celebration. This session is designed for students entering first grade through fourth grade.

Books & Cooks with Andrea Blount | Rising Grades 1 – 3 | Lower School | Supply Fee $10
This camp will be filled with good books and yummy treats! Together we will read classic children’s books and then get cooking! Our recipes will be based on themes from the books we read. We will enjoy a different book and cooking activity each day.

Calling all Problem Solvers with Susy Willetts | Rising Grades 3 – 7 | Lower School 
A morning of fun, hands-on, challenging math and engineering activities! Students will have the opportunity to expand their problem-solving tool boxes and enhance mental math strategies. Campers will experience mathematics through games and real-world contexts.

Fabric Design & Sewing with Kim Anderson and Kimberly Ramberg | Rising Grades 2 – 8 | Lower School 
We will learn about the different types fabrics used in home-decor while learning to create our own designs. We will talk about why we use certain fabrics for upholstery, curtains and pillows. We will also learn techniques in fabric stenciling/painting on fabric and end the week learning to sew a pillow out of the fabric created by each participant. Some sewing experience recommended but not necessary.

Junior Music Theatre with Cammie Dusman | Rising Grades 3 – 7 | Lower School Music Room
Do you love drama and music? Calling all actors for a week of stage exploration including drama games, character work, stage blocking, singing, and dancing. The last day of camp will conclude with a revue show performing some favorite musical numbers. Come light up the stage with creativity and teamwork.

Math in the Garden with Kathy Bleam | Rising Grades 2 – 4 | Lower School Music Room
Join Mrs. Bleam to learn how math and art are found in God’s creation! During the week, we will explore Fibonacci numbers in nature, symmetry in plants, geometric shapes all around us, and other ways God uses math in His design of Creation. Students will sketch every day, noticing patterns and interesting designs, honing their skills of close observation. Students will make gel prints from items found in our very own gardens. We will even sample some tasty geometric shapes made from fruits and vegetables!

College Camp with Mary Layman | Class of 2018 | Upper School Computer Lab | $80 
Get an early start on the college application process for the fall. Topics to be covered include review and prep of the Common Application, good essays, activities sheet, resumes, interview skills, and more!
